Mobile Polar Museum Will Open in Ekaterinbourg

Mobile Polar Museum Will Open in Ekaterinbourg
September 25, 2007

The Museum devoted to the 70th anniversary of the first Soviet drifting research station SP-1 and Chkalov and Gromov’s polar flights will be opened on September 26 in Ekaterinbourg, informed RIA Novosti Alexey Shaburov, Director General of MVK International Exhibition Company.

"The unique project “The Role of History in Life and Business” contains the exhibits from seven Russian and Ukrainian museums and marks the 70th anniversary of the first Soviet drifting research station SP-1.
For me this museum is the historic basis of new generations’ education and further development of Russia”, stated Alexey Shaburov.

“The families of Vodopyanov, Schmidt, Krenkel and other polar explorers’ families tell us about the details of that famous expedition and provide unique information that one can’t find in books…”, added MVK Director General.

The museum started up in April, 2007. Then 25 enthusiasts from different cities of Russia, businessmen and journalists, landed in the spot where the polar researchers were camping 70 years ago.  “We pitched two tents there, one was an exact copy of Papanin’s one, brought the exhibits, organized the concert given by Denis Shapovalov, Mstislav Rostropovich’s student. You can feel the beauty of the North Pole in the Museum”, said Shaburov.

In August, 2007 during the expedition Arktika’2007 some exhibits dived the Arctic Ocean at the North Pole onboard the deep-water manned vehicle Mir-1. MVK was the media partner of the exhibition.

The visitors will see Schmidt’s genuine tent, high fur boots and papakha of Michail Vodopiyanov, the flagman plane Captain-Pilot, and letters, personal belongings and unpublished works of the polar researchers.

“We didn’t’t have enough space for the whole exposition. Besides, MVK correspondents are expected to arrive in Ekaterinbourg from the research station SP-35 and bring new exhibits for the collection”, stated Shaburov.

MVK Director General emphasized that Ekaterinbourg is the first city after Moscow to welcome the Museum. “We plan to exhibit the Museum in Rostov and Saint-Petersbourg”, added he.

Mobile polar museum will be working on September 26-28 in the framework of the 2nd International exhibition Euroexpofurniture-Ural’2007/ EEM-Ural’2007 at Ekaterinbourg International Trade Centre.
